Apple says it will sell an iPad with more memory than the current models available. Apple says that the new, full-size model comes with 128 gigabytes of memory, up from 64 gigabytes.
Nothing else has changed, so it will remain a fourth-generation iPad, which went on sale in November. The memory increase does not apply to the iPad Mini, which also went on sale in November. The new iPad will go on sale in Australia and the US on February 5 for $869 for a Wi-Fi model and $1009 for the version with mobile data access as well. In the US, the iPad will be priced at $US799 ($768) for a Wi-Fi model and $US929 for the wi-fi and mobile version. It will be available in both black and white.
Apple says it has sold more than 120 million iPads since their debut in April 2010. The latest iPads with 16, 32 and 64 gigabytes remain available, starting at $539 in Australia. The older iPad 2 starts at $429."With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs," said Apple senior vice president of marketing Philip Schiller in a statement.
Apple quoted several web application developers who said the additional memory capacity would allow businesses to better serve clients in conceptual design, music recordings and sports strategy.
Apple's move to expand its iPad following comes as the company faces tough questions from Wall Street over its growth prospects.
Company shares lost about 12 per cent of their value last week after the company reported earnings that showed lower profit margins and smaller anticipated growth than expected.
